ICA – Art Conservation

ICA – Art Conservation is a regional, nonprofit center that provides expert professional conservation, preservation, and collections services and educational opportunities for stewards of public and private collections, the general public, and students of all ages. ICA's professional conservators hold degrees in conservation from U.S. and international graduate conservation training programs and, together, represent over 370 years of expertise. They provide care and treatment for paintings, murals, paper-based items, works of art on paper, objects of all media, outdoor sculpture, and textiles objects. The staff consult widely regarding collections, perform organizational assessments, and complete collection surveys. ICA's museum professionals are experienced in management, packing, moving, transport, exhibition, and storage of objects. Each year ICA undertakes over 350 conservation projects ranging in size and scope.

An important aspect of ICA's mission is educating people regarding the material science, technology, creation, and preservation of fine art and cultural artifacts for all levels of learners through thoughtfully designed educational opportunities. Annually, ICA reaches over 8,000 students and lifelong learners, offering tours, workshops, presentations, internships, mentoring, and online resources, as well as, free education programs for all.

ICA's vision is to be the leading professional conservation service provider, educator, and advocate for museums, libraries, public institutions, and private individuals in our community, ensuring preservation of artistic and cultural heritage.

Originally known as the Intermuseum Conservation Association, ICA was established by the directors of six major Midwestern museums in order to provide professional, high quality, and cost-effective art conservation services and specialized graduate level conservation education. ICA became the model used by the National Endowment for the Arts when it incentivized a network of similar centers across the United States in 1971. In 2003, ICA relocated to a newly renovated facility in Cleveland's Ohio City neighborhood to be closer to the population that it serves. ICA's historic building houses conservation laboratories, climate-controlled art storage, workshops, and a large space fronting Detroit Avenue, which will be renovated as an education and community space in 2020.
